Teaching Philosophy
I believe all students should be exposed to music throughout their grade school
years. Music enriches students’ understanding
of other core subjects, like math, English language arts, and science. Educators
in these fields often make songs to help the students remember important
concepts. The music classroom provides opportunities to reemphasize core
concepts in all subject areas no matter what grade the student is in.
Kindergarten students can practice counting and identifying colors through meaningful
musical experiences by singing, playing instruments, or moving. Likewise,
seniors in high school can express themselves by playing, singing, or dancing.
Music education provides an outlet for students to grow emotionally and
empathetically that is not found in any other subject and it is a subject that
can be taught from the beginning of life to the end of life.
Music education is not just decoding notes on a page or singing in a choir. Music education is about allowing students to discover and explore. It provides an outlet for learning about other cultures which later influences the individual’s ability to relate to other people in the world. This is an important skill to learn in our global society. Students should be allowed to experience music through singing and playing instruments both alone and together with other students. They should move, listen to, create, and perform music. While learning musical concepts, students are given the opportunity to exercise all areas of their brains. They naturally think critically when analyzing the form of a piece or decoding the notes in a song. Through composition and improvisation, students learn how to create and express new ideas. When practicing, students learn about discipline and breaking things down into smaller manageable parts, creating individuals that can problem solve efficiently and effectively no matter what the subject matter. During performances, students learn how to manage nerves and make decisions under circumstances of high stress and importance. Besides this, students can turn to music throughout life as an outlet for emotional expression and stress reduction.
Music making is a lifelong activity that allows people of all cultures and ages to work together and communicate while developing skills essential not only to music playing but also to higher education and the workplace. Music is an enjoyable subject that emphasizes other core subjects and has the ability to reach out to the community and make changes for the better. All in all, music is a driving force in education and should always be considered an essential subject like it has been since ancient times.
